Organic fabrics are becoming increasingly popular, especially when it comes to breastfeeding products and baby gear. But many moms may not know exactly what it means when we say fabric is "organic" so we thought we'd give you a short tutorial.
Organic fabrics are all-natural materials that are grown or otherwise produced without the use of pesticides,
herbicides, insecticides, chemical fertilizers or other chemicals. The
land that organic materials is grown on must also be responsibly farmed,
using agricultural methods to help sustain the crop land.
Organic Cottons Many people may think that cotton is naturally - well, natural. This may not be the case. Apparently, it takes a third of a pound of pesticides and chemical fertilizers to produce enough fabric to make one cotton t-shirt. For a cotton fabric to be called organic, it must meet the same stringent guidelines that any crop must meet to be called organic, as described above. Becoming certified organic cotton takes time because fully organic cotton must be grown on land that has not been sprayed with any banned substance for three years. However, cotton that is grown on farms in the process of completing their three year period is given the title of transitional cotton.
In terms of the difference in wear, many people believe that organic cotton is softer and feels better on your skin, making it an ideal product for use in goods that come into contact with babies' soft and sensitive skin.
The Nursing Cover Boutique is proud to offer nursing covers using organic cottons that are designed by NursEase Nursing Shawls and Slurp & Burp (the later being made with partial organic cotton).
Natural Bamboo Fabrics Bamboo fabrics are also becoming more popular as the "Green" movement spreads. Grown with the same standards as organic cottons and other plant crops, organic bamboo is cleaner than its non-organic counterpart. Manufacturers using organic bamboo generally leave out the extensive bleaching process that turns bamboo white, opting to leave the bamboo in its more natural cream color.
Bamboo fabric is similar to cotton in looks. It is lightweight and breathable and has excellent wicking properties (good for keeping you dry). To some extent bamboo is antibacterial. Bamboo fabric is extremely soft and is tolerated well by people with sensitivities to other fabrics such as wool or hemp.
